PS Vita failing in Japan?

The Sony PS Vita's sales in Japan are at their lowest since launch. The company's response? It's a "good start". Wake up and smell the coffee, Sony.

Now, let's start by getting things very clear: I really like the Sony PS Vita. In my recent review of the launch hardware and gaming offering, I gave it a (high for me) 8/10. It is an absolutely spectacular and unrivalled system in terms of bringing console-level power to a handheld form. The two analogue sticks, in particular, make other handheld control schemes look rubbish. That said, it's fairly obvious there are some issues with the PS Vita - most notably, its price. In a smartphone world, it's too much. And it looks increasingly like the Japanese, the only people to be able to buy one quite yet, agree.

Last month, while the 3DS forged ahead following a superb finish to the year, the PS Vita had only sold around 440,000 units in Japan. The picture is now significantly worse - last week, Sony sold around a mere 15,000 PS Vitas. That's the lowest amount since the launch. The same week, the 3DS sold 80,000. January is admittedly a tough time to sell games and handheld consoles, as all the Christmas money is gone. But despite that, Sony desperately needs some momentum for its console in Japan.

What, then, is Sony's response? In a call to analysts, Sony's Chief Financial Officer, Masaru Kato said: "we do not think we have any problems" and called the launch so far "a good start". Sorry, Kato-san, but it's not looking like that from here.

Hopefully, Sony's handheld console will have a much better time in the west - the key games (Uncharted, Unit 13 and WipEout) are a much better fit for European and US gaming tastes. But the price, it still keeps coming back to that price.

So, will you empty your pocket to the tune of £230 for a PS Vita come launch day? Does it appeal? Let us know in the comments...

I loved the PSP when it came out and was excited to hear that a new console like it was coming out. However, the price was too high. I agree with the comment below, Sony has to do something about it or it will fail, not only in Japan, but in most other countries. If Japan can't afford to buy one of their own inventions, what is to say anyone else can? Also, i really want to try the console out but, especially after Christmas, my pockets are empty.

I'm pretty sure the PSP retailed for roughly the same price & that faired quite well. I just think there isn't the spare cash lying around like there was when the PSP got released. I've been keeping an eye out on the next gen consoles & there's a rumour that the next Xbox will be a cheaper consoles with a GPU that would struggle to run BF3 at top spec & that's a console that's a year away at the earliest & it might be delivered under spec. I'm hoping that it's just one of those fake rumours that can float around, but it certainly is in line with people's finances at the moment.  People just might not have the money to afford 'Avatar' style graphics (as reported last year) capable machines. Maybe even £230 might be a bit much. I want a VITA, but I can't justify the expence.

I definitely agree. Something's got to change or the PS VITA will fail badly in Japan!
